CTP vs CPA

There are almost two dozen financial certifications and designations according to the International Financial Management Association. Most people have heard of the CPA designation. Here is what FMA says about the CPA designation:

Those holding the CPA designation have passed examinations on accounting and tax preparation, but their title does not indicate training in other areas of finance.

While these skills are useful in certain contexts, these are not the core functions of the Treasurer's office. Typically, a CPA will do taxes, audits, and business consulting.

A CTP (Certified Treasury Professional) designation is a recognized certification in the corporate and banking worlds that emphasizes treasury management, risk management, cash flow, and investments. These ARE core functions in the Salt Lake County Treasurer’s office.

Here is what FMA has to say about the CTP designation:

The CTP credential is widely regarded by treasury and finance professionals as one of the leading credentials in the field of corporate finance and treasury operations. It demonstrates a high standard of professionalism and a commitment to performance.

The Salt Lake County Treasurer oversees the collection, distribution, and investment of billions of taxpayer dollars. As the county gets larger and has larger budgets, the need for a treasury professional becomes even more important.

Phil Conder is the first person to run for Salt Lake County Treasurer as an actual Certified Treasury Professional. Combined with his current working knowledge of the office, Phil Conder is the best choice to continue the exceptional work that the office is doing now.
